fb is creating new trends. new fashion statements. new lists of things to do so that one can be on the "im cool" list..
as mentioned b4.
out of the blue. so many ppl have started to run marathons..
even ppl i know who hated exercising. dont exercise. or simply dont run at all.. ended up posting pics of themselves in marathons. makes me wonder whats e rationale for joining a marathon?
1) because they wanna keep fit n stay in shape
2) its fun ma.. cos can run with their friends
3) because everyone else on fb is doing it. n i NEED to run a marathon so that i can post my awesome pic on fb
well.. i guess option 1 n 2 sounds alright. but option 3 is kind of ridiculous.

n i guess its the same for elections.
suddenly its v cool to vote for WP. of cos im siding neither WP nor PAP since im not involved in this new round of GE..
just started to think about the rationale behind how ppl chose who they wanted to vote for..
maybe. it sounds cooler to vote for the opposition now.. esp on FB. i dont see any supporters supporting PAP.. or even if there are.. they r not voicing out much on FB. prob because they r gg to stuck off the "im cool" list.. lol
of cos that's just a sweeping statement. there are bound to be some. or even many who run because they like to run n to run with friends. there are also ppl who vote for the group that they have faith n trust in the most.
but
its also undeniable that..

even though FB may not the sole factor affecting our lives and how we live our lives. but yet
we cant deny that it does have a tremendous impact somewhat on our lifestyles.. n how we learn to define certain ideas/thoughts/things as something that is "in" and something that is "out"....

even on my trip to turkey. ok. having took sociology of tourism. PLUS this time round im following a tour group. it totally made the idea of me being stuck in a "tourist bubble" even clearer. as i was snapping pictures.. i was just thinking. why m i snapping these pictures.. issit for my own pleasure? or issit so that i could go back to singapore. post it on fb n flaunt to ppl. HEY! ive been to turkey!
couldnt come up with any conclusion.. because.. even b4 everyone was on fb.. my travelling experiences have already begun.. in pri sch... with the band .. with my parents with my uncles.. n den in sec school with my frens.. so its hard to decipher
but as of now. i guess...
i should just take pics because i wanna take. n so that i can rem all the memories.
n not so that other ppl can stalk me

"So often, we settle. In a new career, a new city, a new apartment, we find ourselves stranded in a life where we can’t just call someone up any time of day and go “hang out” like we used to. Making new friends is incredibly intimidating, and even just finding the time to nurture something can be far too taxing. But we fear loneliness, we fear being excluded — so we fill our lives with acquaintances. There are coworkers, whom you talk to, but you probably wouldn’t hang out with if you weren’t forced to socialize. There are neighbors, who have the alluring convenience factor, but often not a lot of substance. There are friends of significant others, who come into your life peripherally and rarely become deep friends of your own. Our lives become filled with brunches, happy hours, dinner parties, and cocktails with people who are nice enough, but with whom we wouldn’t share a secret. With whom we wouldn’t cry. With whom we wouldn’t laugh until our stomachs ached. They are simply people to move around with, people who fill your life and your social calendar, people with whom you pass some time because to not do so would make you rude, would make you strange."

"But then, a friend comes back into town, or perhaps they just get a break in their newly-packed schedule. For whatever reason, the stars align, and you’re able to be with someone for whom words are not enough. Your friendship — your love — is contained in gestures, in unspoken inside jokes, in discrete looks that say everything, in hugs, and in tear-inducing laughter. You’re reminded of everything that a friend truly is, and the ease with which you can share everything and catch up, with which you can make each other laugh and fundamentally understand is almost unsettling. What have you been missing out on? Have you forgotten that, at one point in your life, you only made time for the people with whom you shared absolutely everything? That the idea of making brittle social engagements with people you know out of necessity would be absurd? It’s as though you’ve forgotten what a friend itself really is, how wonderful it feels, and how affirming it can be of all that we love about life."

"Sometimes we don’t thank our friends enough — for being there, for loving us, for being able to exist in the sidelines because of distance or schedules but come back into our lives with full force when the opportunity arrives. Our real friends, whose love and humor can lie dormant for stretches but doesn’t simply die, often go unappreciated. We owe them so much, and they are such a huge part of who we are, but we can often forget that as we construct our own lives. And we’ll surely make new friends as we grow — and are done stumbling into adulthood and everything that comes with it — but they won’t be a replacement, and we shouldn’t forget that. We owe it to ourselves to thank the people who have been there for us, and who remind us that we’ll always be worth more than just a handshake and an empty “we should grab a coffee soon.” TC mark

adapted from "A Thank you to Real Friends" dedicated to my two true frens. RENA CHAN n ANITA NEO

As time passes and each year is followed by the next..things seemed to have moved on.
Upon reflection
I think about myself. about the kind of friends i have made over the years
no doubt. i have made many great frens in NTU.
however. no matter how many great friends i have made. i realize that. there is this unsurpassable joy or anticipation when meeting old friends.
old friends, the people whom i have known and who have known me since eons ago. so long that sometimes i feel that they know the real me better than i know myself. =)
this post is dedicated esp to rena and anita
my two old friends who have known me since secondary school days.
the days where our hair looked like ultimate messes. curly. short. hideous. hilarious.
the days where we quarreled ridiculously over stupid matters.. and then making up after a while
the days where grudges were bore for insignificant amounts of time
the days where we chiong-ed down the 6 flights of stairs just to ensure that we dont have to q too long for our recess
and even then, as we moved on the sajc. where things changed. where there was more tension and yet stronger bonds of friendship
the days where we jumped for joy at being in the same school
the days where we ponn-ed class to play chong kak in the canteen
the days where we ignored one another and were pissed
the days where we didnt talk
but then
even till then, we were still old friends.
and then we moved on to university. anita in NUS. rena in HK. and me in NTU
separated be it in terms of distance or even in terms of time
but at that moment, still we made an effort to meet. even though the time we met decreased
even though the effort to meet was immense due to our different schedules and scattered locations.
for so many years. 2001 when we entered Nan Hua. (ok we werent really friends then.) ok. so let's start from 2003(when we entered the same class), till date. 2012.here we are.. after 9 years...
and
at some point i felt angry. that why issit that other friends in your life seemed more important than me
or that at times. i felt so left out of your life.
even till today. sometimes i feel like saying. HEY! have u two forgotten about me?
but den.
come to think of it
didnt i fall into the same pit? commiting the same mistake ?
i have become so preoccupied with my own current life that i have failed to give and put in my effort to meet up. to care. to even misss the two of u.
i have become so engrossed in my own studies, meeting my current friends, that i forgot the amount of effort you two gave me, be it for exams or for my birthdays.
i have become so selfish that all i cared about was my own feelings. how sad or how angry i was at being forgotten that i myself have neglected the two of the bestest humans i have met in the span of my 24 years of life. the people who made me  who i am todae. the ppl who accompanied me into becoming who i am today.
n for that
im remorseful

but even then.
im thankful not just at this moment. but i believe, even when i reach my dying days.
that these two ppl appeared in my life and created memories that cannot fade. who roused laughters that are resounded.

to my two dear old friends. forgive me for being the selfish me and being so engrossed and stuck in my own life. let us all put in effort to always meet, catch up. regardless of how much time has lapsed. regardless of how little time we have for each other. regardless of the new ppl who have come into our lives.
even though i dont tell u two.
but even till now
i know deeply. and yes anita neo. TBH. YOU TWO ARE REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME.
